The pull-up

Train with ALP Episode 4 cover: Anthony at the top of a pull-up on a gym rack. Title: The Pull-Up.
What is a pull-up? Start from a dead hang, set your shoulders down and back, then pull until your chin clears the bar and lower with control.
Back-view diagram of the top of a pull-up highlighting the lats and upper back as main movers, the biceps and forearms helping you pull and grip, and the core supporting.
Why learn the pull-up? A real test of strength, a stronger back that supports good posture, and grip that carries over to other lifts.
Monty: Shoulders down, then pull. Set your shoulders before you pull, so your back does the work. First-class MSc in Biomechanics from St Mary’s University and 13+ years in the fitness industry.
ALP Collective classes with Monty: Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30pm in Shoreditch, Wednesdays 6pm in Moorgate. First two classes for £20, also bookable on ClassPass. DM to book.

The pull-up is the classic upper-body pull. From a dead hang, you set your shoulders, pull until your chin clears the bar, then lower with control. It trains the lats and upper back, with your arms, grip and core helping.

Monty’s cue: “Shoulders down, then pull.” Set your shoulders first, so your back does the work and your arms follow.

The back squat

Train with ALP Episode 3 cover: Anthony back squats to a box while coach Monty watches. Title: The Back Squat.
What is a back squat? The bar rests on your upper back, not your neck. Sit back and down with your chest up and knees tracking over your toes, then drive through your whole foot until you’re standing tall.
Side-view diagram of the bottom of a box squat highlighting the quads and glutes as main movers, the inner thighs helping drive up, and the core and back supporting.
Why squat to a box? Monty’s cue: again, just tap. Same depth every rep, control on the way down with no sitting and relaxing, and confidence under the bar while you learn.
Monty: Again, just tap. Tap the box lightly without sitting, then drive straight back up. First-class MSc in Biomechanics from St Mary’s University and 13+ years in the fitness industry.

The back squat is the classic lower-body lift. With the bar across your upper back, you sit back and down, then drive up through your whole foot. It trains the quads and glutes, with your core and back working to keep you upright.

This episode squats to a box. The box gives you the same depth every rep and a clear target while you learn. Monty’s cue: “Again, just tap.” Touch the box lightly, don’t sit down and relax, then drive straight back up.

The bench press is the classic upper-body press. It trains the chest, the front of the shoulders and the triceps, and it’s one of the easiest lifts to track as you get stronger.

This episode follows Anthony’s road to a bodyweight bench: from 40 kg feeling hard a year ago to 80 kg, with a missed 82.5 kg that shows progress isn’t a straight line.

What is a Romanian deadlift? Hips go back, the weight stays close, and you stand by driving the hips forward.
Side-view diagram of a hip hinge highlighting the hamstrings, glutes and lower back as main movers, with the upper back and grip supporting.
Why it is worth learning: everyday strength, a stronger back of the body, carry-over to squats, deadlifts and running, and easy to scale.
Monty: Fitness should be accessible, not intimidating. First-class MSc in Biomechanics from St Mary's University and 13+ years in the fitness industry.

The Romanian deadlift, or RDL, is a hip hinge: the hips travel back, the knees stay soft and the weight stays close to your legs. It trains the hamstrings, glutes and back, and it scales easily from light to heavy.
