Episode 1

The Romanian deadlift

What is a Romanian deadlift? Hips go back, the weight stays close, and you stand by driving the hips forward.
Side-view diagram of a hip hinge highlighting the hamstrings, glutes and lower back as main movers, with the upper back and grip supporting.
Why it is worth learning: everyday strength, a stronger back of the body, carry-over to squats, deadlifts and running, and easy to scale.
Monty: Fitness should be accessible, not intimidating. First-class MSc in Biomechanics from St Mary's University and 13+ years in the fitness industry.
ALP Collective class details: Wednesdays 6pm at Solo60, Errol Street, Moorgate. Intro offer of two classes for £20, maximum 10 per class, 1:1 PT trial sessions available. DM to book.

The Romanian deadlift, or RDL, is a hip hinge: the hips travel back, the knees stay soft and the weight stays close to your legs. It trains the hamstrings, glutes and back, and it scales easily from light to heavy.

Expert guidance from Monty of MoveWithMonty: first-class MSc in Biomechanics (St Mary’s University) and 13+ years in the fitness industry.

  • What it is and why it is worth learning
